The People's Committee of Trà Leng commune recently issued a reforestation plan for 2026 with the goal of greening approximately 150 hectares of barren land and hills, and restoring headwater forest areas within the commune. This is considered one of the key tasks to protect the ecological environment, mitigate the risk of landslides, and promote sustainable development for the western highlands of Da Nang.
Restoring greenery to the high mountains
Located at an altitude of nearly 1,500m above sea level, Trà Leng is known as a land covered in mist year-round, where ancient cinnamon forests stretch across the mountainsides. It is also the long-standing home of the Ca Dong, Xơ Đăng, and Mơ Nông ethnic groups – communities closely associated with the forest for generations.
According to the plan, the reforestation area in 2026 will focus on barren land, hills with degraded vegetation, and areas requiring headwater forest restoration to increase water retention, prevent erosion, and protect the ecological environment. In addition to timber trees, the locality also encourages the development of native trees and medicinal plants suitable for natural conditions to combine forest protection with livelihood development for the people.
Connecting forest protection with community livelihoods
According to the People's Committee of Trà Leng commune, planting and restoring forests not only has environmental significance but also plays an important role in the economic development of the highlands.
In recent years, many local households have developed models of growing cinnamon under the forest canopy and cultivating Sâm Ngọc Linh in primeval forest areas. This is considered a direction to increase income while raising awareness of forest resource protection within the community. The local government announced that it will continue to mobilize people to participate in forest protection and development programs, combined with raising awareness about the role of forest ecosystems in the lives and safety of mountainous areas.
